This month saw the second event in the Creatively Centred series \u2013 this time focusing on fashion, sustainability and how the creative sector can support a much-needed cultural shift in the fashion industry.<\/p>

Creative Central Newcastle partnered with IMPACT+ and Northumbria University<\/a>\u00a0to host\u00a0Wear to next? Working together to shape the future for sustainable fashion<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on Wednesday 22 May at The Common Room in the centre of Newcastle.<\/p>

Attendees were encouraged to network as well as take in the IMPACT+ exhibition showcasing environmental pollutants in air, water and soil environments, shop for pre-loved bargains at a pop-up boutique from Cancer Research UK and give their wardrobe favourites some TLC at The Repair Shop.<\/p>

At the centre of the event,\u00a0Professor Anne Peirson-Smith<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Dr Alana James<\/strong>\u00a0from Northumbria University welcomed a panel of sustainability experts from across the fashion industry and beyond.<\/p>

Speakers included\u00a0Gillian Ridley Whittle<\/strong>, founder and CEO of Peachaus, sustainability consultant\u00a0David Reay<\/strong>, sustainability consultant and writer\u00a0Emma Slade Edmondson<\/strong>, Deploy chief product officer\u00a0Tosin Trim<\/strong>\u00a0and RE:BOURN founder\u00a0Sophie Cabourn<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Fall of Fast Fashion<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There\u2019s no denying that fashion is big business, and at a dangerously high cost. \u201cThe textile and clothing industries are the second biggest\u00a0 revenue driver in the world, after oil and gas\u201d, David explained, \u201cit\u2019s also the second biggest polluter in the world”.<\/p>

Responsible for some of the poorest working conditions globally \u2013 with 93% of garment workers not being paid a living wage<\/a> \u2013 as well as significant material waste and environmental damage, the fashion industry as it exists today causes significant harm to people as well as the planet.<\/p>

For former Topshop Fashion Director Gillian, the industry\u2019s dark side became impossible to ignore: \u201cI realised I had been part of a really cruel industry. I realised I could no longer be part of this because I had been part of the problem, and I needed to be part of a solution \u2013 part of creating and reimagining the industry\u201d.<\/p>

This realisation is being made by many people in the fashion industry and by consumers alike. Although fast fashion continues to be popular, as evidenced by the large turnout at Pretty Little Thing’s recent casting call<\/a> where 3,500 women gathered in Soho for the chance to be the next face of the brand, an increasing number of individuals are rejecting what they perceive as an unethical, wasteful, and harmful industry.<\/p>

Sustainability consultant Emma explained, \u201cWe have seen behaviour change\u2014we have seen the second-hand market grow exponentially\u201d.<\/p>

According to the panel, fashion brands\u2019 endless pursuit of profit at the expense of people and planet will ultimately pave the way for their own downfall.<\/p>

\u201cI think what\u2019s going to happen is\u2026a big crumbling of old institutions and businesses who have not been able to re-engineer their model, who\u2019ve kept on the trajectory of trying to drive profit in a declining market\u201d, Gillian warned, \u201cI think they will crumble”.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A new approach for a new world<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For David, the matter of educating customers about the importance of sustainability is a crucial one if there is any hope of stopping the consumer cycle of \u201cbuying all the junk and feeding the beast\u201d.<\/p>

\u201cThe dilemma is that we have to convince the suppliers and the brands but mainly we\u2019ve got to convince the customer to buy better,\u201d he explained.<\/p>

However, there is evidence to suggest that the tide is turning. Speaking about the increasing popularity of fashion rental, Emma said: \u201cThere\u2019s an appetite for\u2026 access over ownership\u201d.<\/p>

For Emma, embracing new business models can be a way to meet a growing consumer need as well as being sustainable. \u201cIt\u2019s a way that we can start to really change our behaviour when it comes to overconsumption and overproduction\u201d.<\/p>

The time has come to \u201creimagine what a fashion brand actually is\u201d, according to Gillian. Starting from scratch is a tough order for any business, however it may be one of the best ways to transform fashion into an ethical and sustainable industry.<\/p>

New small businesses have the flexibility to operate from a sustainable standpoint from their inception. For example, sustainability has been the driver for Sophie\u2019s business from the beginning: \u201cSustainability is really at the heart of what we do. It\u2019s kind of how I got started\u201d. Speaking about her own brand Peachaus, Gillian said: \u201cwe just want to be totally authentic and transparent. That\u2019s our culture\u201d.<\/p>

For Chief Product Officer Tosin, Deploy embodies a \u201cblueprint for 360 sustainability\u201d. She explained: \u201cat every point within our processes and our decision-making, we are looking to be less wasteful and use resources as much as possible\u201d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

By its very nature, fashion is adaptable and innovative \u2013 and for sustainability experts, it may be this innovation that holds the key to its own salvation.<\/p>

\u201cCan the fashion industry really have a positive impact on fixing itself? I think there is so much hope in the innovation that comes out,\u201d said Emma, \u201cyou see so much innovation come out of the fashion industry that can be applied elsewhere\u201d.<\/p>

It is this innovation that underpins what Tosin and her team do at Deploy. \u201cMultifunctional clothing\u2026that\u2019s something that we really feel is like a creative solution to an endemic problem of overproduction in the fashion industry\u201d, Tosin explained, taking off her own removable collar and cuffs with a flourish to demonstrate the versatility of Deploy\u2019s garments.<\/p>

As consumers turn away from the abundance and convenience of mass clothing production, it can be something more complex than monetary value that attracts them to sustainable fashion. While becoming more socially and environmentally conscious, there may also be an element of people reimagining their relationships with garments, and by extension each other.<\/p>

For pre-loved fashion entrepreneur Sophie, clothing has the power to hold a tangible historic and emotional value that ultimately holds more weight with consumers. \u201cPeople feel like taking a little bit of a story home with them\u201d she explained, \u201cwe have a lot of information [about each garment] \u2013 on the year it was made, where it came from, where it was made\u201d.<\/p>

Sophie has found that this approach attracts other fans of fashion and sustainability alike and creates new connections: \u201cwe\u2019ve started a little bit of a community with our products, [creating] the kind of space where we could have these conversations”.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Moving forward with purpose<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It is clear that governments and leaders are starting to take notice of the issues facing fashion. Following an investigation into three prominent fashion brands over greenwashing, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recently issued an open letter to the fashion industry, warning businesses of their obligations and responsibilities.<\/p>\n

David, who has worked across multiple industries, believes that for any meaningful change to occur, action has to be taken at the top. \u201cSooner or later, governments in the world will legislate to support what we\u2019re talking about\u201d he explained, \u201cit has to happen because they know the destructive effect on the planet\u201d.<\/p>\n

David also stressed the importance of understanding politics in order to champion change \u2013 particularly ahead of the upcoming election: \u201cwith the General Election, we all get a chance\u2026 to put in place people who will be stimulated, people who will want something to happen\u201d.<\/p>\n

For Emma, legislation is the final push needed to make companies change their models: \u201cover the years, we\u2019ve seen organisations professing to change. I think that we need legislation to hold organisations to account\u201d.<\/p>\n

Disillusioned with the damage the fashion industry was causing both people and planet she decided she needed to set a new precedent for the industry and so launched ethical underwear, sleep & loungewear brand Peachaus in 2022 to make women feel everyday beautiful inside and out.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Alana is an Assistant Professor in Fashion in the School of Design at Northumbria University. Her expertise lies in using design tools, methods, and approaches to create sustainable innovation in the global fashion value chain.<\/p>

Through her work, she collaborates with multiple disciplines and a wide range of stakeholders across the fashion and textile sector to collegiately respond to complex environmental and social challenges.<\/p>

Anne is a Professor and Subject Lead for Fashion in the School of Design at Northumbria University.<\/p>

She is an experienced academic teacher, researcher, and research project manager with a creative industry background. Anne has secured various industry-oriented research projects focussing on communicating and marketing sustainability and circularity in the fashion industry, clothing longevity and durability and multi-stakeholder initiatives.<\/p>

Anne has also been involved in a number of recent consultations with global denim manufacturers, workwear companies, leading online retailers, upcycling designers, reuse and recycling companies, and sustainability NGOs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
