The British Academy Summer Showcase is an annual festival which highlights the best new research projects shaping the humanities and social sciences.<\/p><p>The <i>Mapping Accent Variation and Bias in the UK <\/i>exhibit is fully interactive and aims to increase visitors&#8217; knowledge of accent variation in the UK. Since people form <span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">judgements about others from the way they speak, and listeners are often unaware of their deeply embedded &#8216;implicit&#8217; <\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">linguistic biases, the exhibit also aims to increase visitors&#8217; understanding of their own, and others, language-based <\/span>prejudices. The activity is suitable for both children and adults. Visitors view their results immediately following completion.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3779435\" data-id=\"3779435\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ece4e00 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ece4e00\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<b>Boundary mapping<\/b><br><Br>\n\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\">To share their perceptions of accent differences in the UK, visitors take a brief exercise to draw\/circle boundaries on a minimally-detailed map of the UK where they think different accents of English are spoken. Subsequent feedback sessions will create debate about the linguistic features listeners use to recognise
