Welcome

Welcome to the Research Through Design (RTD) Conference series website. RTD is an experimental conference that supports the dissemination of practice-based design research. RTD welcomes submissions from all areas of design and comprises a curated exhibition of design research artefacts accompanied by round-table discussions in ‘Rooms of Interest’. With this format, RTD aims to present an alternative to the traditional conference presentation of papers in darkened auditoriums, and supports a more discursive, synergistic setting that places the presentation of designed artefacts at the heart of proceedings.

This website is the online home for the conference series, providing information about past and future RTD conferences, and documentation of the previous conference programmes and experiences. The website also provides news about forthcoming events and publications that may be of interest to previous RTD conference attendees and design practitioner-researchers more broadly. The main aim of this site is to support and connect a burgeoning community of those practicing ‘research through design’, creating opportunities for continuing and extending the interesting conversations and provocations that took place at the RTD conference events.

The last edition of the conference, RTD 2019, was held at the Science Centre, Delft, on 19th to 22nd March 2019. The RTD 2019 General Chairs were Elisa Giaccardi and Pieter Jan Stappers, and the organising team brought together a wealth of experience from three universities in the Netherlands, TU DelftTU EindhovenUniversity of Twente, and those who have pioneered research-through-design projects and conversations in international communities. Please see the RTD 2019 microsite for conference documentation.

We were originally hoping for the next edition of RTD to take place in 2022, however this was not possible in the end due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts. Having taken a pause during the national lockdowns of the last couple of years, we are currently discussing the future of the conference. The Steering Committee members will update this website with news in due course.

In the meantime, we welcome ideas for exciting and experimental ways for the RTD community of researchers to engage in future editions of the conference. Please do get in touch with the Steering Committee if you have any suggestions or considerations: researchthroughdesign@gmail.com.

We would also be interested to hear your comments and ideas about how the series website could be developed.
