The Other Side of Me

Aycliffe Secure Centre

The project includes workshops in dance, creative writing and visual art for vulnerable and disadvantaged young people and young offenders (aged 11-15) at Aycliffe Secure Centre UK.

The workshops offer the young people opportunities to create high quality work with experienced practitioners culminating in displays of artwork and creative writing, and performances with professional dance artists.

2018 – an intensive themed half-term week in collaboration with Dance United Yorkshire and Nicole Vivien Watson (Surface Area Dance Theatre)

2020 – one day of visual art sessions and one day of dance workshops with Black British and Indigenous Australian dance artists (NT Dance Company).

2023 – one day of visual art sessions

Ann Haigh, Deputy Centre Manager says: “Projects like this can be good for those inside residential units because they help to identify things the children are good at and enjoy, and this can be useful for supporting and guiding them towards activities when they leave.” Ann says the sessions assist the young people with gaining skills and confidence and conquering negative life experiences.
