Desert Disorders
Desert Disorders is a multi-disciplinary project that seeks to challenge deserts as marginalised, unproductive spaces of ‘disorder’. Using literary, historical and ethnographic methodologies, the project aims to place deserts at the centre of an interrogation of colonial and postcolonial authority and placemaking with a view to recovering alternative, possibly resistive forms of sovereignty amongst desert populations. The project is comparative, with a focus on India’s Thar desert and the arid regions in and surrounding Somaliland.

Research Team
Our international team works between Northumbria University, Lancaster University and IIT Delhi. We come from diverse fields in the Humanities and Social Sciences, including literature, history, sociology and social anthropology.
