The
Care Workshops

A key aim of this project was to identify effective communication strategies to empower consumers in responsibly consuming, caring or disposing of clothing.

As such, it was important to build a robust understanding of how care communication is formulated and disseminated from a brand/retailer perspective.

Collaborating with UKFT we facilitated a workshop with industry professionals working in garment technology and sustainability roles and discussed their current strategies, challenges and knowledge gaps. Additionally, participants brainstormed ideas about the future of care communication in light of a shifting policy landscape.

Workshop Activities:

Activity 1:

We asked participants:

  • Consider your brands current care communication practice; what are the priorities and strategies driving action?
  • What are the challenges/limitations of care communication?
  • What information do you draw upon to devise care communication? Is there anything missing?

Activity 2:

We asked participants:

  • What key drivers will shape the transformation of care communication?
  • What are the possible futures of care communication and practice (based on the drivers identified)
  • What will the impacts of these changes be?

Preliminary Findings:

Consumer lack the crtitcal knowledge needed to effectively utilise care communication

Lack of mandatory legislation combined with financial constraints limit some brands from engaging in robust testing to support their care communication

There is a need for greater collaboration to harmonise care commuincation language across the sector

Digital product passport could be used innovatively to communicate about care
