Swimwear Sustainability: Innovations, Longevity, and Responsible Care
Due to the functional demands of swimwear and its frequent exposure to harsh conditions like chlorine, seawater, and sunlight, durable synthetic materials such as polyester and elastane are favoured. However, these materials rely on finite resources in the form of crude oil and therefore have consequential environmental implications. Moreover, the recyclability of these fabrics is often complicated, if not impossible, since swimwear fabrics are typically made from a blend of different fibres.
Creative Central - Wear to Next?
This month saw the second event in the Creatively Centred series – this time focusing on fashion, sustainability and how the creative sector can support a much-needed cultural shift in the fashion industry.
Creative Central Newcastle partnered with IMPACT+ and Northumbria University to host Wear to next? Working together to shape the future for sustainable fashion on Wednesday 22 May at The Common Room in the centre of Newcastle.


Multi-Stakeholder Initiatives
Science-based targets (SBTs) incorporate specific and measurable objectives to confront climate change and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Integral for catalysing actionable environmental efforts, SBTs provide organisations with a systematic approach to formulating emission reduction goals that align with the latest climate research. Since these objectives derive from scientific research, they are sufficiently ambitious to contribute meaningfully to the commitments outlined in the Paris Agreement.
Greenwashing Vs Greenhushing
Greenwashing, a misleading marketing tactic in which companies make unsubstantiated claims about their sustainability efforts, has become increasingly common in recent decades across numerous industries. Greenwashing promotes consumer mistrust and has a long-term detrimental influence on a brand’s image.


IMPACT+ Symposium
On 23rd January 2024, the IMPACT+ Network hosted its first symposium at Northumbria University in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The event brought together interdisciplinary delegates from academia and industry, assembling world-leading expertise in forensic science, soil ecology, sustainable fashion, and air quality management.
Understanding the Environmental Impact of Fashion
There is widespread global concern for the environmental and social impact caused by processes and behaviours implemented across the fashion and textile industries. Much of the industry operates on a linear ‘’take-make-waste” model, intensifying its negative effects on the environment and social dynamics while enabling a global single-use culture.
