Daniel Carey

I joined Northumbria as a Research Fellow in 2020. I am currently working on Cumulative Revelations of Personal Data which is funded by the EPSRC. In this project, I explore digital privacy and how our personal information powers a largely unseen surveillance economy. In particular, I am interested in how apparently innocuous pieces of personal information can betray personal details and pose risks to personal security and reputation.

In 2019 I published my PhD thesis, Investigating the value of disruptive design interventions in the context of informal dementia care. This AHRC-sponsored research was a collaboration with Newcastle Carers charity in Byker. I worked with informal dementia carers (typically friends and family) to better understand their experiences with health and social care services. This informed further projects with informal carers, the NHS, local authorities, and charities, to explore how we might redesign dementia support services to give carers the most appropriate support at the earliest possible stage.

I am particularly interested in service design, design justice, and accessibility.

Before starting my PhD, I worked as a lawyer specialising in Mental Health and Court of Protection cases.
