Marco Mason

Senior Lecturer

I am a lecturer at the School of Design at Northumbria University UK.

With a Ph.D. in Design Sciences (2012), I am specialized in Design Research for Digital Cultural Heritage.  I have been researching and teaching in leading research centres such as Iuav Faculty of Arts and Design ITA, , Massachusetts Institute of Technology USA, School of Museum Studies in Leicester UK, and now Northumbria School of Design.

I seek an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of design, digital humanities/heritage,  museum studies, and social science for the study of digital media design and its practices.

Between 2019-2020, I collaborated inr a major AHRC founded project titled “One by One: Building Digital Confident Museums” that aims to help UK museums of any size better define, improve, measure and embed the digital literacy of their staff and volunteers in all roles and at all levels.

In December 2018  I successfully concluded my second Marie Curie project (H2020 Reintegration Grant), titled “Design Thinking for Digital Heritage: Developing Communities of Design Practice for Visitor Experience.” It is a joint project with the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester and the University of CambridgeFitzwilliam Museum (secondment).

I was Postdoctoral Affiliated Member at the Clare Hall college, University of Cambridge.

In October 2015 I successfully concluded my first Marie Curie fellowship (International Outgoing Fellowship – FP7), titled “Digital Media for Heritage: Refocusing Design from the Technology to the Visitor Experience” that aimed to investigate design methods and techniques for Cultural Digital Heritage. The research was conjunctly  conducted by the Program in Science, Technology, and Society  at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester UK.
