Sarah Gilligan

Dr. Sarah Gilligan is a Senior Lecturer in Fashion Communication in the School of Design at Northumbria University (UK). Prior to joining the team at Northumbria in June 2020, Sarah was the Programme Leader for FdA Design for the Creative Industries and taught on a range of FE programmes at Hartlepool College (UK). She is the co-founder of the interdisciplinary Fashion, Costume and Visual Cultures (FCVC) Network for which she received a British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award and co-organised conferences in Zagreb, and Roubaix together with smaller face to face and online events. She is a member of the Critical Costume Steering Group and is on the editorial team of Film, Fashion and Consumption journal (Intellect). Sarah is also on the editorial boards of Fashion, Style and Popular Culture journal, and the forthcoming International Journal of Sustainable Fashion and Textiles (Intellect).

Sarah’s research and publications centre on clothing and identities on and beyond the screen. She recently published her open-access article ‘Suits and subcultures: costuming and masculinities in the films of Pedro Almodóvar’ (co-written with Dr. Jacky Collins) in Film, Fashion & Consumption (8:2) and in 2020 has guest edited the FCVC Network special issues of Clothing Cultures (6.1), Critical Studies in Men’s Fashion (7.1-2) and Queer Studies in Media and Popular Culture (5.2-3). Sarah is currently co-writing articles with Jacky Collins on fashioning ageing stars, and also on costuming in television drama (especially Killing Eve). She is also developing her independent research on Tilda Swinton, film, fashion and performance as part of a wider research project.
